Gli spazi urbani residuali, recintati, abbandonati, inaccessibili rappresentano una risorsa per le città: sono luoghi “retro” in cui è ancora possibile osservare una natura “selvatica”, microcosmi fatti di “resti”, lasciti del passato , essenze spontanee. Non si tratta tuttavia di luoghi “statici” (benché momentaneamente in “stand-by” rispetto alle strategie di pianificazione del territorio) ma in continua trasformazione (dovuta all’azione dell’uomo o della natura stessa). In quanto risorsa del territorio, in ragione della loro ricchezza biologica, ma anche del valore simbolico che essi hanno assunto, è importante che essi non rimangano “invisibili” e sconosciuti (o poco conosciuti).
Tramite una maggiore conoscenza e consapevolezza della “consistenza” reale di questi luoghi è possibile promuove una forma di sensibilizzazione per la loro protezione e conservazione.
Il progetto Backyards nasce dall'esperienza del progetto "Milano e Oltre: creatività giovanile verso nuove ecologie urbane" - Cantiere Bovisa, ideato e curato da Connecting Cultures.
Il progetto si propone di realizzare una atlante on-line, una piattaforma da cui sarà possibile comunicare le riflessioni, i progetti, la documentazione prodotta nel corso del workshop, non solo in un’ottica “narrativa” ma anche propositiva e progettuale di lungo termine. Un contenitore “attivo” che metterà in rete interventi, testi, riflessioni e opere di artisti, progettisti, pensatori che hanno e stanno assumendo il terzo paesaggio come ambito privilegiato di interesse ed intervento.

Residual urban spaces, fenced, abandoned, inaccessible are a resource for the city: they are “backyards” where it is still possible to observe a different Nature, microcosms made of leftovers, legacies of the past, wild plants, weeds. But these are not "static" places (even though in"stand-by" state as regards to planning strategies), but constantly changing (due to the action of man or nature). As resources, because of their biological complexity, but also for the symbolic value that they have assumed, it is important to produce knowledge on their biodiversity, ecological, aesthetical and ethical value. Through a more conscious awareness of the "consistency" of these places we can promote a form of protection and conservation of them.
Backyards was born from the project "Milan And Beyond: youthful creativity to new urban ecologies" - Bovisa, curated and directed by Connecting Cultures. The project proposal is to produce an on-line atlas, a platform from which we can communicate ideas, projects, documents produced during the workshop, not only in a "narrative" way but also looking to a long-term perspective. An "active" network that will connect texts, thoughts and the works of artists, designers, and thinkers who are assuming the third landscape as privileged area of interest and intervention.
